It’s amazing at what you can learn when you set your mind to it. It is equally amazing how much you thought you knew, but then realize you were wrong or that there were many little pieces of information that you were missing. Those little pieces can completely change how you see the big picture. On my journey to health, I am finding that my biggest challenge is learning. Health is a very liquid concept – the concepts are constantly changing, being fine tuned, and improved upon, so it is really important to stay on top of research and learning everything that you can everyday.

There is so much conflicting information about our health right now, it feels almost impossible to know where to start and what to believe. My best advice for anyone who is feeling frustrated, or confused about the world of health is to do your own research and make your own decisions. Do your research, and learn everything you can about every possible angle or point of view on the topic. Once you know all of the ins and outs, you need to decide what is best for you based on your body.

From all of the reading that I have done on the topic of health, the one thing that sticks out to me the most is that everyone’s body is different. Each person is going to have different reactions to foods, preservatives, additives etc. It is almost impossible to just go with the flow – follow the latest diet trends and recommendations – because they won’t necessarily work for everyone. The only way to find out what will work for your own body is to really, truly listen to what your body is trying to tell you. Get headaches? Bloating? Tiredness? These are results of your body trying to tell you that something is wrong. What you put into your body can make a world of difference for your health and happiness. The catch is that it won’t be the same food that makes everyone get headaches, or bloating or tiredness. One person might might have troubles digesting broccoli, while others have no problem with it. The key is to pay really close attention to how you feel after you eat –  and narrow down the foods until you know what food is making you feel terrible.

The frustrating part with developing a healthy and balanced lifestyle is that it takes time. A lot of time. A lot of people are looking for quick fixes, choosing to partake in ‘diets’ that they use for the short term, and then stop using once they have lost weight. Once they stop the diet, they end up regaining most of the weight that they lost, plus more.

Anyways… I’ve been severely rambling. My main message: knowledge is power. Make sure that you know and understand both sides of the story before you make your decisions. Often times, nutrition information coming from the media, on food packaging and online is EXTREMELY misleading. Know your stuff so that you can avoid being duped by any misleading information you might come across.

Quick Update…

Good Evening!

I really hope that everyone is having a great week thus far! The days have been ridiculously busy since the start of the New Year, getting back into the groove of school, work and daily routine. Maybe even pursuing some New Year’s resolutions!

My week started off a bit rough: I accidentally cut my thumb while cutting a cucumber and needed to get six stitches on Monday night! It was a dumb mistake, and I find it more inconvenient than anything – it’s hard to cook, get ready in the morning, wash dishes, drive…  I think you get the picture. I can barely even type! The most frustrating part is that I can’t work out for the next week 😦

Anyways – I”ve been making sure I eat tons of veggies to help with the healing process. I’ve been mostly eating green smoothies, because they’re really easy to make and cooking is rather difficult at the moment.

From the research that I’ve been doing (which at the moment, constitutes Googling – so I’m not entirely sure of the accuracy of the information), eating foods rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Zinc will help promote the healing process of my wound. While I’m sure that getting the proper amount of vitamins and minerals is essential to healing well, I figure it can’t hurt to make sure that I get tons of these three. I’ve had a lot of Kale in my smoothies (a fantastic source of both Vitamins A and C) along with Spinach, Cashews and Pumpkin Seeds for zinc. Of course, I’ve also been eating to make sure I get a wide variety of minerals, vitamins and macronutrients.

What is Health?

As I look around at modern society, along with the people in it, I feel very dis-heartened about the future – about my future, as well as the future of everyone else who is currently learning to carve their own path in the world. We are stepping into a civilization that has amazing potential! Technology is brining us to new levels of living and experiencing the world, and it just keeps getting better. The thing that I find to be disheartening about the future, however, the fact that the general health of the population seems to be deteriorating every day, and people aren’t actually able to enjoy the wonderful lifestyle that is available to them.

When I look into my future, and I am 60, 70, even 80 years old, I picture myself to still be in great shape, doing the things that I love to do, with my loved ones at my side. Yes, I am getting (or have) grey hair, and wrinkles, and maybe my boobs and  butt are sagging – but I am still able to take care of myself and my family. I picture myself playing with grandchildren, and generally ENJOYING my long awaited and earned retirement.

Unfortunately, the truth is that most people won’t have that future. Our population is aging, and due the lifestyle that most people are living, their aging process is enveloped in disease. Diabetes, obesity, heart attacks, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, strokes are all commonly known, and are starting to rule our lives. Most people today believe and accept that growing old developing these diseases go hand in hand. But do they really? I’m not so sure. Today, these diseases are starting to affect more than just the aging population – they are starting to affect the youth in society as well. How can this be?

While I do realize that sometimes these things are unavoidable, I refuse to believe that they are part of the standard process of aging. I know that the lifestyle one lives will greatly influence the possibility of developing these diseases. Science has shown this over and over again. That future that I see for myself, that seems to just be a long lost dream for a lot of society, I plan on doing everything that I can to make it a reality, because I don’t want to just sit back and accept a future that is ripe with disease – I want to know that I did everything I could to create for myself the future I envision, regardless of how it actually turns out.
